Recognizing the potential in Birmingham’s Rail District, a partnership of orthodontists asked Saroki Architecture to update a 1950s warehouse building to meet the needs of their growing practice. Select materials worthy of retention—the concrete block walls, exposed steel beams, ribbed floor decking—were mended and refinished. New stairs, ceilings, and partitions were added and detailed in the familiar industrial aesthetic. Custom millwork elements were designed to promote warmth for the loft-style interiors. The result is an exterior whose shell is understated and whose interior is dynamic yet sensitive.
